The Italian Lakes

The stark contrast of the majestic snow-capped Alps, sweeping down into the crystalline water of the lakes, fringed by lush Mediterranean foliage has inspired some of the most romantic language written by the greatest creative minds in Western civilization. In Roman times politicians and noblemen spent their summers on the lakes. Famous poets, writers, artists, actors, over centuries have all been drawn to the serene atmosphere.

From Lake Orta in the west to Lake Garda in the east, the lakes differ in size and character. Their shores, home to sleepy lakeside towns and busy water sport resorts alike, still retain a mystery and magic that attracts numerous visitors every year.

The three major lakes are Lake Como, the largest tourist attraction, Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. Other smaller lakes include Lake Iseo and Lake Orta, less touristic but equally beautiful.

Cruise boats float leisurely along, taking in the scenery from Lake Como down to Bellagio, stopping off at the world-famous gardens of the Borromean islands on Lake Maggiore.

Lake Como, Maggiore and the Northern part of Garda all belong to the Lombardy region. The delights of the Lombardy region, include some excellent skiing country as it is bordered by the Alps to the North, the designer shopping available in easily accessible Milan, and the rich heritage, gastronomy, culture and beauty of cities such as Mantova and Bergamo.
